Steps to Miles Conversion Chart
Based on a 30-inch step length and a 3 mph walking pace. Change your step length above and this chart updates for you.
| Steps | Miles | Kilometers | Walking time |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1,000 | 0.47 | 0.76 | 9 min |
| 2,000 | 0.95 | 1.52 | 19 min |
| 3,000 | 1.42 | 2.29 | 28 min |
| 5,000 | 2.37 | 3.81 | 47 min |
| 7,500 | 3.55 | 5.72 | 1 hr 11 min |
| 10,000 | 4.73 | 7.62 | 1 hr 35 min |
| 12,000 | 5.68 | 9.14 | 1 hr 54 min |
| 15,000 | 7.10 | 11.43 | 2 hr 22 min |
| 20,000 | 9.47 | 15.24 | 3 hr 9 min |
| 25,000 | 11.84 | 19.05 | 3 hr 57 min |
| 30,000 | 14.20 | 22.86 | 4 hr 44 min |
10,000 steps is about 4.17 to 4.73 miles for most adults. That is 4.2 miles at the widely published female average step length (26.4 inches — typical of a 5′4″ woman) and 4.7 at the male average (30 inches, typical of a man around 6′0″).
One mile takes roughly 1,900–2,400 steps, depending mainly on your step length. Every figure on this page is an estimate — pace and terrain move it — and the calculator above replaces the averages with your own height or measured step length, entirely in your browser.

How Far Is 5,000, 8,000 or 10,000 Steps?
The conversion chart above uses the tool’s single 30-inch default. This table shows the same job done properly for both sexes — the two widely published average step lengths, 26.4 inches (2.2 ft) for women and 30 inches (2.5 ft) for men, walked at 3 mph. The men’s column matches the chart; the women’s column is what the default hides.
| Steps | Women — miles (km) | Men — miles (km) | Time — women | Time — men |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 1,000 | 0.42 (0.67) | 0.47 (0.76) | 8 min | 9 min |

How to Get an Accurate Result
Type a step count and the distance updates as you type — miles, kilometres, steps per mile and walking time together. The Distance to Steps tab runs the conversion in reverse.
The tool offers three levels of accuracy. Pick by how much the number matters:
Use the default
A 30-inch step. Fine for a ballpark answer in one glance.
Enter height & sex
Open Improve Accuracy — the tool estimates your step length from published coefficients.
Measure your step
A measured value beats every estimate, and measuring takes two minutes (method below).
The Steps to Miles Formula
Most of the difference between one calculator and another comes down to the step length it assumes.
Male average — 30-inch step
- 10,000 × 30 = 300,000 inches
- 300,000 ÷ 63,360 = 4.73 miles
- 4.73 × 1.609344 = 7.62 km
Female average — 26.4-inch step
- 10,000 × 26.4 = 264,000 inches
- 264,000 ÷ 63,360 = 4.17 miles
- 4.17 × 1.609344 = 6.71 km
Same step count, over half a mile of difference — step length matters more than any other input.
Why Step Length (Not Stride) Drives the Conversion
Step length and stride length are often swapped online — many published tables list 2.5 feet as a “stride length” but divide by it as if it were a step. Mixing the two doubles or halves your answer, so the definitions are worth thirty seconds.
Step length
Heel to heel between opposite feet. Left foot lands, right foot lands: that gap is one step length.
Stride length
Heel to heel of the same foot. One stride is two steps.
This calculator asks for step length by default. If you have measured a stride, switch the unit selector to stride and the tool halves it for you.
Why this trips people up. Some fitness trackers report “stride length” but populate it with a step-length value, and some sites publish the height formula as a stride formula when it produces step length. If a conversion looks roughly twice or half what you expected, this is almost always why.
How to measure yours. Mark out 30 feet on flat ground. Walk it at your normal pace, counting your steps, then divide 360 inches by the count — 13 steps means about a 27.7-inch step. Walk naturally: stretching your gait gives a number you will never actually walk at.
What Affects the Accuracy of Your Conversion
Any steps-to-miles conversion is an estimate. What moves it, in rough order of size:
Step length
The biggest factor by far. Two people can log 10,000 steps on the same pedometer and cover distances almost a mile apart.
Pace & cadence
Steps lengthen when you walk fast — the same person's step can vary by several inches between a stroll and a brisk walk, even when cadence looks steady on a tracker.
Terrain & gradient
Uphill, sand, snow, grass and stairs all shorten your step, so a hill walk covers less ground per step than the same count on flat pavement.
Age & mobility
Step length tends to shorten with age and with anything that changes your gait.
Running instead of walking. A running gait reaches further than a walking one, so the same mile takes far fewer steps. Measured counts from a 2008 American College of Sports Medicine Health & Fitness Journal study:
| Pace | Steps per mile (approx.) |
|---|---|
| Walking, 20-min mile (3 mph) | 2,100 – 2,400 |
| Jogging, 12-min mile (5 mph) | ~1,950 |
| Running, 8-min mile (7.5 mph) | ~1,400 |
Switch the calculator to your running step length whenever the count came from a run — otherwise the result lands well short of the ground you actually covered. Full comparison: how many steps in a mile.
What your step counter does. Phones, watches and pedometers multiply your count by a step length estimated from your height or calibrated against GPS. That is the same method used here, which is why the numbers are usually close but rarely identical.
The honest way to read any converted distance is as a range, not a fixed figure — unless you have measured your own step length.
Our Methodology
Every number on this page comes from the same arithmetic and the same published averages, and we show both.
The defaults. A 30-inch step length and a 3 mph walking pace, giving 2,112 steps per mile. Thirty inches is the commonly cited average male step length (2.5 ft; the female average is 2.2 ft, or 26.4 inches). Because it is the male figure, the default slightly overstates distance for shorter adults — which is why the tool lets you estimate from height and sex, or enter a measured step length.
The height formula. Height in inches × 0.413 (women) or 0.415 (men). These coefficients estimate step length, not a two-step measurement, and the arithmetic shows it: a 5′4″ woman — 64 × 0.413 = 26.4 inches — matches the commonly cited female average exactly, agreement a two-step formula could not produce. Independently, Scientific American puts step length at 41–45% of body height, a published range that brackets both coefficients.
The constants. 63,360 inches per mile (5,280 × 12). 1 mile = 1.609344 kilometres exactly. 2.54 centimetres per inch exactly.

Frequently Asked Questions
How many miles is 10,000 steps?
It lands in a band rather than on a single number, because step length decides it: about 4.17 to 4.73 miles depending on yours. Full figures by sex and height, walking times and the running version: 10,000 steps to miles.
How many steps are in a mile?
Between about 1,900 and 2,400, depending on step length — 2,400 at the female average, 2,112 at the male. Full breakdown by height, sex and pace: how many steps in a mile.
How long does it take to walk 10,000 steps?
Roughly 1 hr 20 min to 1 hr 40 min at a normal 3 mph pace. At a brisk 4 mph, cut those times by about a quarter.
Is 10,000 steps a day a real target?
It began as marketing — the 1965 Japanese manpo-kei (“10,000-step meter”) pedometer campaign — not research. Later studies find health benefits well below that figure. A reasonable goal, not a medical threshold.
Why is my distance different from another calculator?
Calculators differ in the step length they assume, the height coefficients they use, how they round, and whether they treat measurements as step or stride length. Enter the same measured step length in both and they should agree.
Why does my watch give a different distance?
Same multiplication, different step length — estimated from your height or calibrated against GPS. Enter your measured step length here and the two should converge.
Does running change the answer?
Yes, by a lot: roughly 1,400–1,950 running steps per mile against 2,100–2,400 walking. Enter your running step length rather than your walking one.
Does this calculator count calories?
No, deliberately. Calorie burn depends on body weight, pace and duration — a tool that turns steps straight into calories is guessing your weight. One number that is right beats two where one is invented.
How do I measure my step length?
Walk a marked 30 feet at normal pace, count your steps, divide 360 inches by the count. Do it twice and average.
Are steps and strides the same thing?
No — a stride is two steps. Halve a stride measurement before using it as a step length, or switch the unit selector in the tool.
Do you store my data?
Your calculator inputs never leave your browser — steps, height and step length are processed on your device and never stored. Like most websites, we use Google Analytics to count visits; our privacy policy explains exactly what that involves.
