I'm an SEO and web specialist with about six years of experience building and auditing websites. I started this site after noticing that most step converters online disagree with each other, often because they copy figures without sources or confuse step length with stride length.

I'm not a doctor or an exercise scientist, and this site gives no medical advice. What I do is check every figure back to where it came from, show the arithmetic, and correct mistakes when readers point them out.

Why this site exists

Most step converters online copy the same numbers from each other without saying where they came from. Some divide by a "stride length" that is actually a step length, which doubles or halves the answer. Almost none tell you that the average they use might not fit you.

This site does the opposite:

  • Every figure is sourced. The averages, coefficients and constants used are listed with their origins on the methodology page.
  • Limitations are stated, not hidden. The default 30-inch step length is the commonly cited male average, and the site says plainly that it overstates distance for most shorter adults, then gives you two ways to fix it.
  • Terminology is correct. Step length and stride length are different things, and the site never swaps them.

How the calculator works

Everything runs in your browser. Type a step count and the distance, kilometres, steps per mile and walking time update as you type. Nothing you enter is sent to a server or stored, and there is no signup. The full formula, defaults and sources are on the methodology page.

How this site is funded

The calculator is free to use. The site may show ads through Google AdSense to cover hosting and upkeep. Ads never change the figures on any page. See the privacy policy for how advertising cookies work.
