Most adults take between about 1,900 and 2,400 steps to walk one mile. At the average female step length of 26.4 inches, a mile is 2,400 steps; at the average male step length of 30 inches, it is 2,112 steps. Your own number depends mostly on your height, your sex and whether you are walking or running — all covered below, along with a two-minute way to measure your exact figure.

Average Steps in a Mile: Women vs Men
The two most commonly cited averages are a 2.2-foot (26.4-inch) step length for women and 2.5 feet (30 inches) for men — figures repeated across health and fitness references, though no primary study clearly establishes them (we explain this on our methodology page). Divide a mile — 63,360 inches — by each and you get the two anchor figures:
| Average step length | Steps in one mile | |
|---|---|---|
| Women | 26.4 in (2.2 ft) | 2,400 |
| Men | 30 in (2.5 ft) | 2,112 |
Round numbers like “2,000 steps per mile” that many charts publish sit at the long-legged end of that range — accurate for a roughly 32-inch step, which is longer than either average. If you have ever felt a 2,000-steps-per-mile chart flattered your distance, this is why.
These are averages, not your number. A 5′2″ woman and a 6′2″ man can differ by more than 500 steps over the same mile.
Steps per Mile by Height
Step length scales with height. The standard estimate — the same one our calculator uses — is height × 0.413 for women and height × 0.415 for men, which produces step length (not stride; a stride is two steps). For example, at 5′4″ the female estimate works out to 64 × 0.413 = 26.4 inches — matching the commonly cited female average.
| Height | Women — step (steps/mile) | Men — step (steps/mile) |
|---|---|---|
| 4′10″ | 24.0 in (2,640) | 24.1 in (2,629) |
| 5′0″ | 24.8 in (2,555) | 24.9 in (2,545) |
| 5′2″ | 25.6 in (2,475) | 25.7 in (2,465) |
| 5′4″ | 26.4 in (2,400) | 26.6 in (2,382) |
| 5′6″ | 27.3 in (2,321) | 27.4 in (2,312) |
| 5′8″ | 28.1 in (2,255) | 28.2 in (2,247) |
| 5′10″ | 28.9 in (2,192) | 29.1 in (2,177) |
| 6′0″ | 29.7 in (2,133) | 29.9 in (2,119) |
| 6′2″ | 30.6 in (2,071) | 30.7 in (2,064) |
Height is the biggest single factor, but not the only one — age, terrain, footwear and walking speed all move the figure, which is why a measured step length beats any table. More on step length itself: average step length by height.
How Many Steps in a Mile Walking vs Running?
Everything above assumes walking. Running strides are much longer, so the count per mile drops sharply. A 2008 study in the American College of Sports Medicine’s Health & Fitness Journal (Hoeger et al.) measured one-mile step counts across speeds:
| Pace | Steps per mile (approx.) |
|---|---|
| Walking, 20-min mile (3 mph) | 2,100 – 2,400 |
| Jogging, 12-min mile (5 mph) | ~1,950 |
| Running, 8-min mile (7.5 mph) | ~1,400 |
The practical consequence: if a fitness tracker converts your run using a walking step length, it under-reports the distance by roughly a third at a running pace — less at a jog. Runners converting steps to miles should use a measured running step length, not a walking one.
At a normal 3 mph walking pace, one mile takes 20 minutes — a brisk 4 mph brings it down to 15.
How to Measure Your Own Steps per Mile
Two minutes, no equipment beyond a tape measure:
- Mark a straight 30-foot course (360 inches).
- Take a few natural steps before the start line so you are already at your normal walking pace, then count only the steps you take within the marked 30 feet.
- Divide 360 by your count. That is your step length in inches.
- Do it twice and average the results.
- Divide 63,360 by your step length: that is your personal steps-per-mile figure.
Example: 13 steps over 30 feet → 360 ÷ 13 = 27.7 inches → 63,360 ÷ 27.7 = 2,287 steps per mile.
If you would rather not do the division, enter the measured step length into the calculator — it handles the arithmetic and converts any step count to miles and kilometres at once. A measured value beats every height-based estimate, including ours.
The Formula Behind the Numbers
Every figure on this page is one line of arithmetic:
63,360 is the number of inches in a mile (5,280 feet × 12). The same equation turned around converts a step count to distance: steps × step length ÷ 63,360 = miles. For kilometres, one mile is exactly 1.609344 km.
Worked examples at common step lengths:
- 26.4 in → 63,360 ÷ 26.4 = 2,400 steps per mile
- 28 in → 2,263
- 30 in → 2,112
- 32 in → 1,980
- 34 in → 1,864

Frequently Asked Questions
How many steps is half a mile?
Between about 950 and 1,200 — 1,200 at the average female step length, 1,056 at the male. Halve any figure from the height table above for your own estimate.
How many steps in a quarter mile?
Roughly 480 to 600: 600 at the female average step length, 528 at the male.
How many steps in a mile and a half?
Around 3,170 to 3,600 — 3,600 at the female average, 3,168 at the male.
How many steps in a mile for a woman?
About 2,400 at the average female step length of 26.4 inches. A shorter woman takes more (a 5′0″ woman around 2,555), a taller one fewer (5′8″ around 2,255) — see the height table above.
How many steps in a mile running?
Far fewer than walking: roughly 1,400 at an 8-minute-mile pace and about 1,950 at a 12-minute jog, against 2,100–2,400 walking (ACSM 2008).
Is 2,000 steps per mile accurate?
About 2,000 steps per mile corresponds to a 31.7-inch step — longer than both commonly cited averages. It is a convenient round number, not a measured one. Using the average step lengths on this page, roughly 2,100–2,400 steps per mile walking is a more realistic reference range.
How many miles is 10,000 steps?
Step length decides it, so the honest answer is a band: about 4.17 to 4.73 miles. The full breakdown — by sex, by height, at walking and running step lengths, with walking times — is on 10,000 steps to miles.
Why does my pedometer or fitness tracker give a different count?
Phones, watches and pedometers estimate your step length from height or GPS calibration, then multiply — the same method as any steps-per-mile chart, with a different step length. Enter your measured step length into our calculator and the figures should converge.
How do I turn a distance in miles back into steps?
Multiply your steps-per-mile figure by the distance — at the 30-inch default that is 2,112 steps for every mile. Per-mile answers from half a mile to a marathon: miles to steps.
